Healthy erections in men are part of their healthy sexual life and achieving erections frequently may be said as a good indication. But at times randomly gaining penile erections without any kind of stimulation may point in the direction of something very serious.
While an erection occurring out of the blue can be quite embarrassing, this can also be a sign of ED. Erection occurs when the brain sends signals to arteries in the penile area which dilate and allow it to be filled with blood. Again, a reason causing erection during sleep is the bladder being full which stimulates nerves in an area similar to nerves that are responsible for erections.
Fluctuation in the levels of hormones causing a spike in your testosterone may also be responsible for experiencing random erections at any time during the day. When a man experiences erections randomly during sleeping or in any other condition but struggles to perform in bed. Then this can be a case of psychological ED.
Nocturnal penile erections
Nocturnal penile erections happen at the time of Rapid Eye Movement sleep. They happen when certain regions of the brain are very much activated. This involves areas in the brain that are responsible for stimulating the parasympathetic nerves, suppressing the sympathetic nerves & even the dampening regions forming serotonin.
Sleep is formed by several cycles of REM and non-REM sleep. At the time of REM sleep, there is a shift in the dominant system that gets activated. We move from sympathetic stimulation to parasympathetic stimulation. This is not found in other parts of your sleep cycle.
This shift in balance drives the parasympathetic nerve response that leads to an erection. This is spontaneous & also this does not need being awake. Few men may witness nocturnal penile tumescence at the time of non-REM sleep, particularly in old men. The reason for this is quite unclear. The reason men get up causing an erection may be related to the fact we often wake up coming out of REM. Testosterone, which is at its peak in the morning, has also been shown to increase the frequency of nocturnal erections. Testosterone interestingly has not been found to greatly impact visual erotic stimuli or fantasy-induced erections. These are driven by the reward system which secretes dopamine in the brain.
What Does It Mean If You Completely Stop Getting Morning Wood?
Having an erect penile when you wake up from sleep is an indicator of healthy blood and nerve supply to the penile area. The presence of NPT also indicates that you are capable of getting and sustaining an erection when awake. If you stop witnessing this NPT or notice that you’re not waking up with erect penile. Then this may be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
This is a sign of physical ED. And you may have something happening within your body that’s preventing the right amount of blood or nerve supply for the right erectile function. You may likely experience ED if you have: Healthy Morning wood and it’s a reason to see your doctor rarely. However, two situations may mean it’s time than the right time to make an appointment.
Frequent night erections can signal that your body is in good motion. A healthy body can expect to get hard three to five times each night, each one lasting for about 30 and 60 minutes. According to a research doctors call these erections while you sleep “nocturnal penile tumescence” and they can serve as an indicator of how your entire body is working. They also are helpful when it comes to diagnosing the root of a person’s ED.
At times, it’s often challenging to say if someone’s ED is physiological (due to something such as diabetes or low testosterone level) or psychological (due to anxiety). If you’re able to gain an erection in the middle of the night with constant regularity. You know that your erection is being caused because of psychological reasons and not physiological ones.
Nocturnal tumescence of the penile happens because there’s a natural growth in the parasympathetic activity of a system. It sends signals to the muscles to relax, slow the heart rate, and push the brain into REM. This can generate a nocturnal erection in men. A healthy person may have many in an evening without even being aware of it. Another biological reason for erections at the time of sleep is that testosterone. The hormone that drives sexual drive, is also at its highest in the morning forming in morning erections.
Blame the Bladder
Many people think erections in the morning are due to a full tank because many men drain the lizard once they wake up with one. There could be meat to this claim as a full bladder can get the nerves excited in the spine which creates an erection.
